This plant generally grows best in morning sun or indirect bright light throughout the day. Although it can handle full sun, its delicate leaves can burn easily in strong sunlight if the plant is dry. It is important to use a soil mix that allows for proper drainage to avoid root rot, which can occur if the plant is overwatered. It is recommended to water the plant only when the soil is completely dry, which is generally once a week during the growing season. Fertilizing can be done once a month with a specific fertilizer for cacti, but should be stopped throughout the winter.

Propagation of Echeveria desmetiana v subsessilis variegata is best achieved through stem cuttings. Leaf propagation is not recommended as it often results in a small percentage of variegated plants at best. When taking stem cuttings, allow them to dry for several days or more until a callus forms. As a general rule, allow at least one day for each millimeter in diameter of stem to dry properly. Once the callus has formed, the cuttings can be planted in a mixture of sand, soil, and pumice or perlite, and kept moist until roots develop.

This succulent plant is best suited for zones 9b to 11b, which translates to minimum temperatures of -3.9°C to 10°C. Many will revert to the regular Superbum form and you will also get a percentage with extreme variegation, some completely pink which by themselves will not survive due to lack of chlorophyll for photosynthesis. If they have a regular or partially variegated head attached they will grow quite beautifully providing you take the proper care. Out of all the perfectly variegated leaves we have grown, not a single one has produced a perfectly variegated plant. It appears likely that this particular form can only be reproduced vegetatively by cloning the parent plant. It has been pleasing that all the plants we have stem cut, have grown perfectly variegated offshoots which is not normally the case with other plants, though we do have a small sample size, so this may not always be the case.

Be careful not to take a head cutting too early before the plant is of sufficient size to sustain itself and be sure to do so when plants are actively growing and you have some time up your sleeve to get them well rooted and healthy before winter. Those of you up north will likely find it easier to propagate with the warmer weather. Also be particularly cautious with watering, especially with small plants as they can rot very easily if kept too wet. Better to lose a couple of bottom leaves from under watering than lose the whole plant due to stem rot.

Give them some extra food as well to help them along. We have been using Powerfeed available at Bunnings with great results. Though do be very selective with which plants you use it on, as it can cause extreme vegetative growth and loss of colour on plants that are best grown slow. We mainly only use it on the slower growing highly variegated plants to keep them in top condition. Of course good light, growing medium and pest control should go without saying. It is self-seeding and can also be propagated by stem cuttings. Simply cut a stem with a sharp, clean knife or scissors just below a node, remove the lower leaves, and let the cutting dry out for a day or two. Once the cutting has calloused over, plant it in well-composted clay soils or potting mix and water sparingly until new growth appears.

The plantlets produced on the flower head will also fall off and grow into independent plants, and the stems will root at the nodes wherever they touch the ground, making propagation even easier. Also known by its synonyms, including Hildewintera colademononis and Winterocereus colademononis, this species is a testament to the diversity and beauty of the cacti family. Originating from the rugged terrains of the Bolivian Andes, it adapts remarkably well to similar Australian climates, making it a favored choice among gardening enthusiasts.

Characterized by its distinct appearance, the Monkey Tail Cactus boasts light green, cylindrical stems, reaching lengths of up to 2.5 meters and a diameter of about 7 cm. These stems are uniquely covered in white, hair-like spines, resembling the fluffy tail of a monkey, hence its common name. The cactus has an epilithic growth habit, starting upright and gradually becoming pendulous, which adds to its charm and visual appeal.

The plant's allure is heightened during its flowering season, from late spring to early fall, when it produces vibrant red flowers. Each flower measures up to 8 cm long and 5 cm in diameter, contrasting beautifully against the soft, hairy stems. Following the flowering period, the plant bears reddish, spherical fruits, about 1.2 cm in diameter, which contain black seeds.

Caring for the Monkey Tail Cactus is straightforward, ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners. It flourishes in full sun and well-draining soil, with watering required only when the soil's top 2.5 cm dries out. During cooler months, reduced watering is essential to prevent root rot. The plant's trailing growth habit makes it perfect for hanging baskets, allowing it to be a versatile addition to both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Incorporating the Monkey Tail Cactus into your garden or home is not just about adding a plant; it's about embracing a piece of exotic wilderness. With its unique form and minimal care requirements, it offers a blend of botanical intrigue and practicality, making it a captivating choice for plant lovers.

Monkey Tail Cactus plants for sale shown in 70mm pot.
