echeveria-choux-cream
Echeveria 'Choux Cream'

Echeveria 'Choux Cream', also known as Echeveria 'Cream Puff', is a relatively recent Korean hybrid distinguished by its exceptionally thick, fleshy leaves and compact rosette growth. The foliage is predominantly soft blue-green to grey-green with a powdery surface, while cream, pale yellow and delicate pink tones can develop according to season, light and growing conditions.

Exceptionally Thick, Fleshy Leaves

One of the defining characteristics of 'Choux Cream' is the substance of its foliage. The leaves are unusually thick and chubby, tapering towards a small point while retaining a rounded, heavily swollen appearance through much of the leaf. This gives established rosettes a substantial form even when the plants themselves remain relatively compact.

The leaves are covered with a natural waxy bloom that contributes to their soft, powdery appearance. This protective coating is best left undisturbed, as handling can remove or mark the bloom on the leaf surface.

Soft Cream, Blue-Green & Pink Colour

Colour changes naturally through the year. Plants may be predominantly pale blue-green or grey-green during periods of active growth, sometimes with creamy or pale yellow tones through portions of the foliage. Under suitable seasonal conditions, soft pink and blush colouring can become increasingly apparent, particularly towards the leaf tips and outer portions of the rosette.

The combination of the powdery surface and underlying pastel colours can give the foliage a particularly soft appearance. Individual plants will naturally vary, and the intensity of the cream and pink colouring will change with season and growing conditions.

Rosettes, Multiple Heads & Crested Growth

'Choux Cream' normally develops as a compact rosette, but it also has a strong tendency to produce multiple growing points. In our nursery, leaf propagation frequently produces several young rosettes from a single leaf rather than just one, allowing plants to develop into multi-headed clusters as they mature.

We have also found this cultivar capable of producing fasciated growth from leaf propagation. Our Echeveria 'Choux Cream' Crested plants originated this way. Fasciation is not produced by every propagated leaf, but when it occurs the normal rosette growth can develop into broadened crests, multiple closely arranged growing points, or a combination of crested and conventional rosette growth.

Hardy & Easy to Grow

In our nursery in Victoria we have found 'Choux Cream' to be a hardy, reliable and easy-growing Echeveria. It has performed particularly well for us under normal nursery conditions, and we have found it relatively trouble-free compared with some more sensitive Echeveria cultivars.

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with good airflow and plenty of light. Good light helps maintain compact rosettes and encourages stronger seasonal colouring. Plants should be acclimatised gradually when moving from protected conditions into substantially stronger light or intense Australian summer sun.

The unusually thick leaves hold substantial moisture reserves, so established plants are well equipped to tolerate periods between watering. Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings rather than keeping the roots continuously wet. Regular nutrition during active growth can support healthy foliage, root development and the production of additional growing points.

Excellent for Leaf Propagation

'Choux Cream' is particularly well suited to propagation from leaves. In our nursery we find that its large, fleshy leaves propagate readily, with the substantial reserves contained within each leaf supporting the development of new roots and young growth while the new plant becomes established.

Leaf propagation frequently produces multiple growing points, making this an interesting cultivar for growers who enjoy propagating their own plants. Healthy mature leaves should be removed cleanly with the base intact and allowed to begin producing roots and new growth under protected conditions.

Echeveria 'Choux Cream' plants for sale shown in 70mm pots.
