Aeonium 'Chocolate Rose'
Aeonium ‘Chocolate Rose’ is a bold, large-growing Aeonium prized for the rich chocolate, burgundy and red tones that develop across its impressive rosettes. During active winter growth the foliage can be considerably greener, before stronger light and warmer conditions transform the plant into the deep, warm colours responsible for its name.
Large Rosettes & Strong Growth
This is not a miniature Aeonium. ‘Chocolate Rose’ is a vigorous branching cultivar capable of developing into an impressive specimen exceeding 1 metre in favourable conditions. Large rosettes are carried on strong branching stems, creating an architectural plant particularly well suited to large pots or a prominent position in the garden. Specialist Australian growers also describe it as less leggy than some other large Aeonium cultivars.
Its changing colour is one of its best features. Fresh growth may show a green centre surrounded by increasingly dark red-brown foliage, while strong light can deepen mature leaves towards chocolate-burgundy. The contrast between new and older growth gives established plants considerable depth and character.
Growing Aeonium ‘Chocolate Rose’
Grow in bright light to sun for compact growth and the richest foliage colour. Plants moving from protected conditions into strong sun should always be acclimatised gradually, particularly during Australian summer. A freely draining succulent mix is essential, with more regular watering during active cooler-season growth and considerably less while growth slows in hot weather.
Its exact origin is not well documented, although specialist growers regard it as a cultivar or hybrid possibly involving Aeonium arboreum. Rather than relying on uncertain parentage, ‘Chocolate Rose’ is best appreciated for what it clearly offers: size, strong branching growth and exceptional dark seasonal colour.
