Aeonium 'Phantom' Variegata is a rare and highly distinctive variegated Aeonium, celebrated for its undulating leaf margins, dramatic seasonal colour shifts, and its largely solitary growth habit. Unlike many clumping Aeonium varieties, this cultivar offsets infrequently, contributing to limited availability and strong demand among dedicated collectors.
Botanically, this cultivar forms a single, well-defined rosette of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves with softly wavy edges, creating a refined, sculptural silhouette. The foliage texture and fluid outline immediately set it apart from standard Aeonium forms, giving the plant a living, almost molten appearance when seen in strong light.
Colour expression is where Aeonium 'Phantom' Variegata truly excels. During cooler, milder conditions — particularly through winter — the leaves display green centres bordered by soft yellow margins, gradually developing pink to rosy red highlights. As temperatures rise and light levels increase, the plant undergoes an extraordinary transformation. New growth may retain a faint hint of green and yellow, but mature leaves quickly intensify to deep crimson red with vivid hot-pink highlights. The midleaf darkens dramatically, often appearing nearly black, creating a powerful contrast against the luminous red tones as sunlight passes through the foliage.
Growth is upright and slow to moderate, typically reaching around 40–60 cm tall over time under favourable conditions. It thrives in bright light with protection from extreme heat, prefers free-draining soil, and benefits from reduced watering during warmer dormant periods. Best suited to containers, feature pots, or curated succulent collections, this is an exceptional cultivar valued as much for rarity as for visual impact.
