Cotyledon Papillaris 'Pixie Bean'
Cotyledon papillaris 'Pixie Bean' is a charming, compact succulent admired for its plump, bean-shaped leaves and distinctive burgundy-red markings. The soft green to blue-green foliage develops attractive reddish tips and occasional curved markings along the leaf surfaces, creating a delightful contrast that makes this unusual Cotyledon particularly appealing in small pots and succulent collections.
About Cotyledon papillaris 'Pixie Bean'
Cotyledon papillaris is native to the dry regions of South Africa and Namibia, where it grows as a low, spreading succulent shrublet. The species is naturally variable, producing several distinctive leaf forms, including the particularly attractive, rounded foliage associated with 'Pixie Bean'.
The fleshy leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along short stems, creating compact clusters of bean-like foliage. Their surfaces may display a fine, slightly textured appearance, while the characteristic burgundy-red markings become more pronounced under favourable light and seasonal conditions.
Growth Habit & Seasonal Colour
'Pixie Bean' develops a low-growing, branching habit, gradually producing additional stems that form attractive multi-headed clusters. As plants mature, their branches may spread beyond the original pot, making them suitable for decorative containers, shallow succulent arrangements and well-drained rock gardens.
Leaf colouring varies naturally throughout the year. Bright light encourages compact growth and stronger reddish markings, while plants grown in softer light may display predominantly green foliage. The contrast between the rounded leaves and their darker tips gives this cultivar its distinctive character.
Flowers
Mature plants may produce slender flowering stems carrying small, bell-shaped flowers in shades of yellow-green to orange, sometimes with reddish markings. Flowering generally occurs during the warmer months, although timing varies with growing conditions.
While the flowers provide additional seasonal interest, 'Pixie Bean' is primarily grown for its unusual foliage and attractive branching form.
Growing Cotyledon papillaris 'Pixie Bean'
Grow 'Pixie Bean' in bright light with several hours of gentle direct sunlight to maintain compact growth and encourage its characteristic red markings. Morning sun is ideal in many Australian climates, with some protection from intense afternoon heat during summer.
Plant in a free-draining succulent potting mix and water thoroughly once the growing medium has dried. Its fleshy leaves store moisture efficiently, making established plants drought tolerant, although prolonged dryness can cause unnecessary leaf shrivelling.
Reduce watering during cold or persistently wet conditions, and protect plants from heavy frost and prolonged winter rainfall. Occasional light feeding during active growth is sufficient, as excessive fertilising can encourage softer, less compact foliage.
Propagation is generally straightforward from healthy stem cuttings. Allow cut surfaces to dry and callus before placing cuttings into a suitable free-draining growing medium.
Safety Note
Like other members of the Cotyledon genus, this plant should be considered potentially toxic if ingested by pets or livestock. Keep it away from animals that may chew succulent foliage.
