Crassula rupestris, commonly known as Rosary Vine or Concertina Plant, is a striking succulent shrub native to South Africa. Its erect or spreading branches can grow up to 50 cm tall, and are adorned with thick, fleshy, and colorful leaves that range in color from greyish-green to brownish-red, with yellow or brilliant red margins. The leaves vary in size and shape and are opposite, oval to lance-shaped, and nearly equal in width.
From winter to spring, this plant produces small star-shaped flowers that are white or pinkish to reddish, which appear in a dense cluster at the end of the branches, often hidden by the upper leaves. This species thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires very porous soil with excellent drainage, with typical watering needs for succulents. Crassula rupestris is a hardy plant that can withstand temperatures as low as -6.7 to 10 °C.
This free-flowering plant is a popular choice for ornamental use, especially in rock gardens or as a potted specimen. It can also be grown indoors if given enough light. Crassulas are generally propagated by leaves or stem cuttings and can also be grown from seeds and offsets. This plant's scientific name, "rupestris," refers to the species' native habitat of rocky slopes or cliffs. Overall, this easy-to-care-for and beautiful plant is a great addition to any succulent lover's collection.
