Echeveria secunda ‘Glauca’ is a striking, low-growing succulent prized for its perfectly symmetrical rosettes and soft, powder-blue foliage. A native of Mexico’s highlands, where it thrives on rocky volcanic slopes above 2,000 m, this classic species has long been a favourite among collectors and landscapers alike for its elegant form, drought tolerance and effortless charm.

Each rosette forms a dense cluster of spoon-shaped to slightly pointed leaves, often dusted with a protective, silvery farina that gives the plant its distinctive glaucous sheen. In cooler months, leaf tips may flush with pink or red tones, adding seasonal colour contrast. Mature rosettes typically reach around 15 cm across, and over time the plant produces abundant offsets, creating a tidy carpet of interconnected rosettes that fill containers, rockeries or garden borders beautifully.

From late spring into summer, Echeveria secunda ‘Glauca’ sends up slender, arching flower stalks up to 30 cm tall, each adorned with clusters of lantern-shaped blossoms in rich red and golden yellow hues. These blooms attract pollinators and add a cheerful burst of colour above the foliage. The plant’s long cultivation history has also made it a parent to several popular hybrids, including Echeveria ‘Imbricata’ and ×Pachyveria ‘Scheideckeri’.

Hardy and resilient, this species thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained, sandy or gravelly soil. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and prefers deep but infrequent watering. In Australia’s frost-prone regions it is best grown in pots or protected outdoor spots, while in warmer climates it makes an excellent groundcover. Easy to propagate from offsets or leaf cuttings, Echeveria secunda ‘Glauca’ is a timeless choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance yet visually stunning succulent.
