Lobivia arachnacantha ‘Gold Form’ (syn. Echinopsis ancistrophora subsp. arachnacantha) is a captivating miniature cactus prized for its intricate spination and brilliant golden blooms. Native to the rocky hillsides of Bolivia—particularly the regions of Santa Cruz, Samaipata, Chuquisaca, and Cochabamba—and extending into northern Argentina, this high-altitude species thrives at elevations of 1,800 – 2,600 m, where it experiences strong sunlight and well-drained, mineral soils.

This compact, clustering cactus forms dense mounds of slightly flattened, dark green to reddish-green stems, each typically 2 – 4 cm across. The ribs are rounded and softly notched, bearing 9 – 15 fine, curved spines that radiate like the legs of a spider—hence the name arachnacantha, meaning “spider-spined” in Greek. In the ‘Gold Form’, the spines often take on a lighter yellowish tone, enhancing the plant’s warm, sunlit appearance even when not in flower.

During spring and summer, Lobivia arachnacantha ‘Gold Form’ bursts into colour with spectacular funnel-shaped flowers up to 5 cm across—often larger than the plant itself. The blooms range from golden yellow to deep orange, sometimes shading to amber or apricot tones. Each flower opens in daylight and lasts several days, creating a dazzling display against the cactus’ compact body.

Over time, this species forms charming clumps that are ideal for rockeries, troughs, or container collections. It prefers full sun, gritty soil, and light watering during active growth, with a dry rest in winter. Enduring brief frosts to about –5 °C when kept dry, Lobivia arachnacantha ‘Gold Form’ rewards attentive growers with its striking symmetry, delicate web-like spines, and luminous blooms that seem to glow with Andean sunlight.
