Lobivia arachnacantha ‘White Form’ (syn. Echinopsis ancistrophora subsp. arachnacantha) is a charming miniature cactus celebrated for its finely webbed spines and luminous white flowers that contrast beautifully with its deep green body. Originating from the elevated, rocky slopes of Bolivia—particularly in Santa Cruz, Samaipata, Chuquisaca, and Cochabamba—this mountain-dwelling species flourishes at altitudes between 1,800 and 2,600 m, where sunlight is intense and rainfall is concentrated in the summer months.
This small, clustering cactus forms compact, rounded stems just 2 – 4 cm wide, dark green to brownish-green in colour, with softly notched ribs that give the plant a sculptural quality. Each areole produces 9 – 15 fine, hair-like radial spines, usually pale tan to silvery white, spreading outward in delicate, curved patterns reminiscent of a spider’s web—the inspiration behind the name arachnacantha, meaning “spider-spined”. These spines not only protect the plant but also shimmer beautifully in sunlight, giving the clumps a soft, silken appearance.
In late spring and summer, Lobivia arachnacantha ‘White Form’ puts on a breathtaking display of large, pure white funnel-shaped flowers, often exceeding the size of the plant itself. The blooms, up to 5 cm across, open during the day and remain radiant for several days. Their pristine colour gives this form an especially elegant and refined character compared to the golden and orange hues of other variants.
Easy to grow and floriferous, this Bolivian gem thrives in well-drained, gritty soil with ample sunlight and infrequent watering. It tolerates light frost (down to around –5 °C if kept dry) and readily forms attractive clusters over time. Lobivia arachnacantha ‘White Form’ is a superb choice for collectors seeking a delicate yet resilient cactus whose snowy blooms and graceful spines embody the quiet beauty of high Andean habitats.
