Sempervivum 'Black Mini' is a striking, compact variety of the hardy Sempervivum family, often known as “Hens and Chicks” due to its clumping growth habit. Native to the rocky, alpine regions of Europe, Sempervivum species are celebrated for their resilience, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in poor, stony soils. 'Black Mini' is a modern cultivar prized for its rich, dramatic foliage and tidy mat-forming habit, making it a favourite among collectors and landscapers alike.
This succulent produces small, dense rosettes of fleshy, pointed leaves that shift with the seasons. In warmer weather the leaves display bright green tones flushed with maroon tips, while cooler conditions and full sun bring out their deepest hues, often turning nearly black with purple undertones. Mature rosettes typically reach 10–15 cm tall and spread about 15–20 cm across, creating neat clusters that slowly expand through offsets.
In summer, established rosettes may produce a tall flowering stalk adorned with star-shaped, pink blooms. After flowering, the mother rosette naturally dies back, but its numerous offsets quickly fill in, ensuring the colony continues to flourish. This natural cycle gives the plant both character and seasonal interest in the garden.
Easy to grow and virtually maintenance-free, Sempervivum 'Black Mini' thrives in full sun and very well-drained soil, such as gravelly or sandy mixes. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and cold-hardy, coping well with Australian frosts and dry summers. Simply remove any withered leaves and avoid overwatering to keep plants healthy.
Perfect for containers, troughs, and rockeries, this cultivar also makes a superb groundcover where its dark foliage provides contrast and texture. Whether used in a sunny garden bed or a decorative pot, Sempervivum 'Black Mini' offers year-round interest with very little effort.
