Crassula atropurpurea, also known as Purple Crassula, is a versatile and attractive succulent plant that can bring a touch of color and texture to any garden or indoor space. This small, shrubby perennial can grow up to 60 cm tall and has many erect branches with green to yellowish-green or tinged red or purple leaves that can turn deep red or purplish-red in times of drought or sun exposure.
The plant's slender spike-like inflorescence produces small, cream-colored, tubular flowers that appear in spring and summer. It is a variable species that is found in southern Namibia and Karoo to Port Elizabeth in South Africa, where it grows on stony slopes, gravelly flats, or sand among bushes.
To cultivate Crassula atropurpurea, it prefers full sun to partial shade, and well-draining soil with good porosity. It can tolerate short-term freezing but requires protection from extreme cold or heat. Watering should be done sparingly, using the "soak and dry" method, and potted plants require more frequent watering than those in the ground. The plant benefits from organic fertilizer in mid-spring when it starts actively growing, and repotting can be done as needed in the spring.
Propagation of Crassula atropurpurea is best done through leaves or stem cuttings, or by growing seeds and offsets. This succulent is a great addition to any collection due to its hardiness, ease of care, and attractive foliage.
This appears to be a dwarf form of Crassula atropurpurea. Sourced from another grower who couldn't tell us much about them. They were growing in quite shaded filtered light without elongating and also maintaining good colour. They should develop even deeper colour in stronger light and remain compact as evidenced by their visible growth habit.
