Crassula capitella campfire commonly known as Campfire Plant, Red Flames, Red Pagoda, or Saint Andrews Cross, is an evergreen perennial succulent native to South Africa. It has thick propeller shaped leaves in shades of lime to light green that deepen in colour to an eye catching intense orange/red particularly in summer when grown in full sun and kept dry.
It is quite a fast grower with a prostate growth habit. It is quite slow to branch and when left alone the main stem will get quite long and then lay over encouraging lateral branching. In this way if can sprawl out and form a large ground cover with time.
When growing in a pot we prefer to tip prune them to keep them a small and bushy, though it can be a chore as they grow so fast, so we normally don’t grow too many of these. If you have the time and patience though to keep them in check they do look stunning when at their best.
Crassula capitella campfire generally flowers in mid Summer to mid Autumn. Large clusters of small star shaped white to cream coloured flowers sometimes tinged with pink form on long stems. The flowers will bring bees and butterflies into the garden.
This plant is easy to propagate from stem cuttings or leaves. Gently pull leaves downward from the main stem while holding firmly at the base and they will come away easily. You can also pull off leaves with small side shoots still intact with the leaf and lay down on a moist propagating medium to form roots in two to three weeks and then plant.
We also grow the variegated form of capitella campfire which is also an eye catcher as the cream coloured variegation along the margin of each leaf turn as a lovely soft to deep pink making it quite a standout.
