Crassula muscosa 'Green Snake', often hailed as the 'Watch Chain', presents a captivating addition to any succulent collection. Originating from the diverse landscapes of South Africa, including areas from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape, this unique plant thrives in well-drained, rocky environments, reminiscent of its native quartz fields.

Standing up to 30 cm tall, Crassula muscosa 'Green Snake' is notable for its intricate, interlocking leaves that resemble the finely crafted links of a jeweler's chain. These dense, light green leaves completely envelop the plant's stems, creating a lush, moss-like appearance. This attribute harkens back to its Latin epithet 'muscosa', meaning mossy, and its alternative name, 'Clubmoss Crassula'. Its resemblance to Lycopodium, a genus of Clubmoss, is also reflected in its synonym, Crassula lycopodioides.

Ideal for adding a textured, verdant touch to mixed plantings or as a charming small-scale ground cover in rock gardens, Crassula muscosa 'Green Snake' is not only aesthetically pleasing but also hardy. It can withstand temperatures down to approximately -6.7 °C, although it prefers to avoid cold, wet conditions simultaneously.

In terms of care, this succulent favours full sun to light shade and thrives in well-drained soil. It's best watered using the 'soak and dry' method, ensuring the soil is completely dry between waterings. Despite its hardy nature, it is recommended to bring it indoors in colder months, especially when temperatures dip below -6.7 °C.

Propagation is straightforward, making it a popular choice for gardening enthusiasts. Stem cuttings easily take root in stable conditions around 20 to 21 °C, with adequate humidity and light. However, it's important to watch out for common pests like mealybugs and the risks of overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

Crassula muscosa 'Green Snake', with its unique, snake skin-like foliage, is a robust and easy-to-care-for succulent, ideal for hanging baskets and terrariums. Its exotic appearance makes it a striking centerpiece in succulent gardens, adding a touch of intrigue. Perfect for sunny windowsills or home offices, it offers a rewarding experience for both novice and seasoned plant enthusiasts. Its hardiness and minimal care requirements make it a captivating addition to any plant collection.
