Crassula Springtime Variegated is a charming hybrid succulent admired for its compact growth habit, soft pastel blooms, and beautifully variegated foliage. A variegated form of the popular Crassula ‘Springtime’, this cultivar is prized for its ornamental value, ease of care, and sweetly fragrant flowers that bring life to the garden in late winter and early spring.
The most widely accepted belief is that Crassula ‘Springtime’ is a cross between Crassula perfoliata var. minor (commonly known as Crassula falcata var. minor) and Crassula rupestris, although this parentage remains unconfirmed. Some sources suggest an alternative pairing of Crassula perfoliata var. minor with Crassula mesembryanthemoides. Regardless of its exact lineage, this hybrid inherits desirable traits from its presumed ancestors — compact form, floral abundance, and robust nature.
Its fleshy, elliptical leaves grow in opposite pairs along upright to slightly arching stems, often displaying striking variegation in creamy yellow or white against a green to grey-green backdrop. The variegation is caused by a natural mutation affecting chlorophyll, making each specimen visually unique.
In late winter through early spring, the plant produces clusters of star-shaped flowers in soft pink tones with rich red centres. These blooms are lightly fragrant and often likened to the scent of daisies, adding seasonal interest when many other succulents are dormant.
Perfect for pots, rockeries, or indoor displays, Crassula Springtime Variegated thrives in bright, indirect light with limited direct sun exposure. It prefers a well-draining cactus or succulent mix and should be watered only when the soil is fully dry — typically fortnightly in active growth and monthly during dormancy. Though non-toxic to humans, it may cause mild gastrointestinal upset in pets if ingested.
Easy to propagate from stem or leaf cuttings, this slow-growing variety brings soft colour and subtle fragrance to any succulent collection.
