Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' is a distinctive cultivated succulent known for its tightly compacted, rose-like rosette held at the top of an increasingly visible stem. Its plump, overlapping leaves give the mature plant an unusual resemblance to a long-stemmed rose.

Rose-Like Rosettes

The fleshy leaves are tightly arranged into compact rosettes and are typically sea-green to grey-green with a soft glaucous surface. Their broad, overlapping arrangement creates the layered appearance responsible for the 'Lovely Rose' name. Subtle pink and pastel tones can also develop according to season, light and growing conditions.

Individual rosettes generally remain relatively small and compact. As the plant matures, the lower leaves gradually give way to an exposed stem beneath the rosette, making the resemblance to a rose on a stem increasingly apparent.

Growth & Offsets

'Lovely Rose' produces offsets and can gradually develop from a single rosette into a multi-headed clump. The stems can become increasingly elongated with age, while new rosettes develop around the established growth.

Established plants can also produce clusters of small pale yellow flowers, sometimes with a greenish stripe along the petals.

Origins of Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose'

'Lovely Rose' is generally classified horticulturally as a ×Graptoveria, the nothogenus used for hybrids involving Graptopetalum and Echeveria. It is also frequently sold under the name Echeveria 'Lovely Rose'.

The cultivar has been documented as originating in the nursery of N. Kleinmichel and S. Grätz in Wörth, Germany. Its precise parentage has not been established. It has been reported as a mutation of ×Graptoveria 'Titubans', but without reliable documentation of its complete parentage we prefer to retain the established ×Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' name rather than assign unconfirmed parents.

We also grow Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' Variegated, with distinctive cream to yellow variegation, and Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' Monstrose Silk Variegata, a considerably larger-growing monstrose form with silk variegation.

Growing Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose'

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain the compact, tightly layered rosette characteristic of 'Lovely Rose' and can encourage stronger seasonal colouring. Plants grown with insufficient light may become more open and elongated.

Acclimatise plants gradually before exposure to intense direct sun and provide protection from prolonged Australian summer afternoon sun where necessary. Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the mix continuously wet, particularly during cooler conditions.
