Graptopetalum bernalense Variegata, previously known as Graptopetalum paraguayense subsp. bernalense Variegata and also encountered under the botanical name Byrnesia bernalensis, is a beautifully coloured variegated form of this compact Mexican succulent. Its fleshy rosettes combine soft cream, pale yellow and green variegation, with pink and peach tones developing through the paler foliage under suitable growing conditions.

Cream, Yellow, Green & Pink Variegation

The variegation typically produces an attractive mixture of green, cream and pale yellow across the rosettes. Colour is also responsive to growing conditions, with the paler areas capable of developing beautiful pink to peach tones, particularly with good light and suitable seasonal or environmental stress.

As plants mature and produce additional heads, the degree of variegation can naturally vary. Occasionally a head may develop extreme variegation, including beautiful predominantly yellow, cream or pink growth containing very little green chlorophyll. These unusual heads can provide a striking contrast within a mature cluster, but they should be left attached to greener growth, which provides the photosynthetic support they need. Heads containing virtually no chlorophyll should not be removed and propagated independently.

Occasional shoots may also revert towards the non-variegated green form. These can simply be retained or removed according to the appearance you prefer, allowing individual plants to develop their own combination of colours and variegation over time.

From Graptopetalum paraguayense subsp. bernalense to Graptopetalum bernalense

This plant has undergone a botanical name change and is still commonly encountered in succulent collections under its former name, Graptopetalum paraguayense subsp. bernalense. It was originally described under that name in 1986, when it was treated as a subspecies of the familiar Ghost Plant, Graptopetalum paraguayense.

It was subsequently also classified as Byrnesia bernalensis. In 2012 it was recognised at species level as Graptopetalum bernalense, which is its currently accepted botanical name. The older names remain important synonyms and are still widely encountered in horticulture, which is why many growers will continue to recognise this plant as Graptopetalum paraguayense subsp. bernalense Variegata.

A Compact Mexican Graptopetalum

Graptopetalum bernalense is native to Tamaulipas in north-eastern Mexico. Compared with typical Graptopetalum paraguayense, it is smaller in its individual parts, producing relatively compact rosettes with fleshy leaves. The non-variegated species naturally develops yellowish-green to greenish foliage that can take on pinkish tones under suitable conditions.

The variegated form adds cream and pale yellow patterning to this naturally compact growth. Plants remain relatively small and gradually produce offsets, eventually developing into attractive multi-rosetted clusters.

Clustering Growth & Propagation

Established plants can produce offsets around the main growth and gradually develop into multi-rosetted specimens. These can be left attached to create an increasingly substantial cluster or selectively removed once sufficiently developed for propagation.

Older stems may gradually elongate beneath the rosettes, which is a natural part of the plant's growth. Plants can be allowed to develop this form or occasionally rejuvenated by taking rosette or stem cuttings. For propagation, select healthy variegated growth containing sufficient green tissue to support independent growth, while highly variegated heads containing virtually no green should remain attached to the parent plant.

Growing Graptopetalum bernalense Variegata

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with bright light and good airflow. Adequate light helps maintain compact growth and encourages the attractive pink colouring that can develop through the cream and pale yellow portions of the foliage. Plants should be acclimatised gradually before exposure to intense Australian summer sun, as strongly variegated foliage can be more susceptible to damage from excessive heat and sunlight.

Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet, particularly during cooler conditions. Regular nutrition during active growth can help support healthy development, particularly as plants begin producing multiple variegated rosettes.

Orders are dispatched according to our weekly shipping schedule, available on our Shipping page, with tracking provided once your order has been lodged with Australia Post.

Seasonal Colour & Plant Variation

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.

Pickup Information

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
