Pachyveria 'Rough' is an Australian hybrid valued for its exceptionally thick, chunky leaves and compact, symmetrical rosettes. The foliage is normally sea-green to blue-green beneath a soft coating of powdery farina, but can develop striking shades of apricot, orange, red, brown and purple as seasonal and growing conditions change.

Chunky, powdery foliage

The thick, pointed leaves give 'Rough' a substantial appearance even when the plant is relatively young. A natural coating of powdery farina softens the underlying colour and gives the foliage its characteristic pastel finish. This protective coating should be handled as little as possible, as rubbing and fingerprints can permanently disturb the farina on individual leaves.

Colour can vary considerably through the year. Plants in active growth may remain predominantly green or blue-green, while stronger light, cooler conditions and drier periods can encourage increasingly noticeable orange, reddish, brown and purple tones.

Australian origins

'Rough' is an Australian Pachyveria and is also found in cultivation under the name 'Ruth'. It has been attributed horticulturally to Australian hybridiser Jocelyn Ainsworth of Darkes Forest, New South Wales. Its precise parentage does not appear to have been documented, so we prefer not to assign particular Pachyphytum or Echeveria parents to the cultivar.

As a Pachyveria, it belongs to the group of intergeneric hybrids involving Pachyphytum and Echeveria, combining the thick foliage commonly associated with Pachyphytum with an attractive rosette growth habit.

Rosettes, offsets and flowers

Mature rosettes can reach approximately 15 cm or more across under favourable conditions. Plants also produce offsets, gradually developing into attractive clusters that can be left together or separated for propagation once sufficiently developed.

Established plants can produce arching flower stems carrying reddish, bell-shaped flowers. The thick mature leaves can also be used for propagation, although they should be removed carefully to retain the complete leaf base.

Growing Pachyveria 'Rough'

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact rosettes and encourages stronger seasonal colour. Some protection from intense afternoon sun during very hot Australian summer conditions can help prevent scorching, particularly when plants have not been gradually acclimatised.

Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Established plants tolerate dry periods well, but regular watering during active growth helps maintain plump foliage and steady growth. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet.

Seasonal Colour & Plant Variation

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.

Pickup Information

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
