Adromischus hemisphaericus

Adromischus hemisphaericus is a compact South African succulent with thick grey-green leaves that can develop irregular burgundy to purple markings and a naturally flaking waxy surface. Plants branch gradually with age, producing clusters of fleshy leaves that can vary noticeably in shape, size and colouring.

Spotted Leaves & Flaking Wax

The fleshy leaves range from obovate to broadly rounded or somewhat elongated, usually with a flattened to slightly convex upper surface. Colour is typically grey-green, sometimes becoming more silvery as the natural wax coating develops, while many plants produce darker reddish-purple to burgundy spots and markings.

The wax can develop a cracked or flaking appearance as leaves mature. This is a natural characteristic of the species rather than damage or disease, and the amount of wax and darker spotting can vary considerably between individual leaves and plants.

Growth & Flowers

Adromischus hemisphaericus develops branching stems that can become decumbent as they lengthen. Older stems mature to grey and may develop peeling bark, while new growth remains more compact around the stem tips.

Flowering plants produce slender upright inflorescences that can reach approximately 15–25 cm tall. The small tubular flowers are greenish, sometimes tinged brown, with short white to pale pink lobes and darker colouring around the throat.

A South African Species

Adromischus hemisphaericus is an accepted species native to South Africa's Cape Provinces. It occurs naturally in rocky habitats, including granitic and sandstone slopes, where plants grow in shallow, freely draining conditions.

The species is naturally variable across its range, particularly in leaf shape, size, wax coverage and pigmentation. This variation accounts for some of the differences seen between cultivated specimens.

Growing Adromischus hemisphaericus

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and encourages the silvery wax and darker leaf markings, although plants should be acclimatised gradually to strong direct sun.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Reduce watering during cool conditions and avoid keeping the roots continuously wet. The thick leaves store moisture well, making established plants tolerant of periods of dryness.

Please note: From our experience growing, handling and shipping this variety of Adromischus, we consider it well suited to shipping. However, individual leaves can occasionally detach if the plant is physically disturbed during transit or unpacking. A small amount of leaf drop can therefore occur and does not in itself indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

In the wild, leaf detachment and subsequent rooting is a natural means of vegetative reproduction in Adromischus, helping the plants reproduce and persist in their natural habitat. If leaves become detached from your plant, simply lay the healthy leaves on the surface of a free-draining succulent mix in bright, protected light. New roots and shoots will often develop from the base of the leaf over the following weeks. Once roots and new growth begin to develop, gently nestle them into the growing medium and allow the new plant to establish.
