Echeveria 'Red Phoenix' Variegated, also known as Echeveria Suyon Frill Variegata, is an exceptionally striking succulent prized for its dramatic variegation, broad leaves and unusual growth. Its colouring can combine shades of green, cream, pink, red, orange and yellow, with the intensity and distribution of these colours changing naturally as the plant grows and through the seasons.
The large, open rosettes can develop to approximately 15–20 cm across under favourable growing conditions. Stronger light and cooler temperatures can encourage richer red and pink tones, while individual plants may display distinctly different patterns of variegation.
Distinctive Frilled Growth
'Red Phoenix' develops broad, fleshy leaves that can curl, twist and form irregular frilled margins, giving mature plants a wonderfully sculptural appearance. The combination of unusual foliage and unpredictable variegation means that no two plants develop exactly alike.
Its appearance can also change considerably as new leaves emerge and older growth matures. This ever-changing character is one of the features that makes 'Red Phoenix' such an interesting variety to grow and collect.
Surprisingly Robust & Easy to Grow
Despite its exotic appearance, we have found Echeveria 'Red Phoenix' Variegated to be a surprisingly vigorous and rewarding plant when given suitable conditions. Grow it in a very free-draining succulent mix and allow the growing medium to dry between waterings. Bright light is recommended to encourage compact growth and strong colouration.
In cooler climates, we recommend growing 'Red Phoenix' in a pot so it can be moved to a protected position during winter. We have found that prolonged cold and frost can damage and mark the foliage. In warmer, relatively frost-free parts of Australia it should be much better suited to year-round garden growing, provided it has free-draining soil and appropriate light.
Protect from Snails
The most important consideration when growing 'Red Phoenix' outdoors is protection from snails. From our own experience, snails are particularly attracted to this variety and can cause severe damage to the fleshy leaves. They can attack plants in both garden beds and pots, so check regularly and provide suitable protection, particularly during damp weather and periods of increased snail activity.
With protection from winter cold and snails, 'Red Phoenix' is a remarkably rewarding succulent. Its combination of vigorous growth, unusual frilled foliage and spectacular, ever-changing variegation has made it one of our personal favourites.

Colours and variegation will vary naturally between individual plants and according to the time of year and growing conditions.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
