Graptoveria Lovely Rose Variegated

Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' Variegated is most regularly available in our Regular Variegation form, with Extreme Variegation and occasional one-off multi-headed specimens offered when available. Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' Variegated is the variegated form of the distinctive 'Lovely Rose', producing tightly layered, rose-like rosettes patterned in soft green, cream and pale yellow. Individual leaves and plants can vary considerably in the amount and distribution of variegation, with pink and soft blush tones sometimes developing under suitable seasonal and growing conditions.

Cream, Yellow & Green Variegation

The fleshy leaves are broad and closely overlapping, forming the compact layered rosette characteristic of 'Lovely Rose'. Variegation can range from predominantly green leaves with cream or yellow sectors to strongly variegated leaves containing extensive areas of pale cream and yellow.

Regular Variegation is the form we are able to offer most consistently and retains a greater proportion of green within the foliage. Extreme Variegation plants develop substantially larger areas of cream and yellow with considerably less green tissue. Plants expressing this degree of variegation are much harder for us to obtain and are therefore only available occasionally and in limited numbers.

Very occasionally, an exceptional individual develops outside these usual forms. These may include unusual multi-headed specimens such as our Triple Head Regular Variegation and Extreme Variegation Multi plants. These are rare one-off plants rather than regularly stocked variants. When another becomes available, it may be individually listed with photographs showing the exact plant being offered.

On exceptionally rare occasions, an offset or individual rosette can develop almost completely cream or yellow, with virtually no green tissue. In our nursery we have encountered this degree of variegation only once despite growing many 'Lovely Rose' Variegated plants.

Important: Do not remove a completely cream or yellow rosette from the parent plant. Growth containing virtually no chlorophyll has extremely limited ability to photosynthesise and cannot be expected to survive independently. It remains dependent on the connected green portions of the plant for the products of photosynthesis required to sustain its growth. Keeping the rosette attached allows this exceptionally unusual variegation to be maintained as part of the parent plant.

Rose-Like Growth

Like the regular 'Lovely Rose', this form develops compact rosettes of tightly overlapping leaves. As the plant matures and older lower leaves are naturally lost, an increasingly visible stem can develop beneath the rosette, creating the characteristic appearance of a rose held above a stem.

Plants can also produce offsets with age, sometimes resulting in multiple rose-like heads on the same plant. The number of rosettes and the amount and pattern of variegation in each can vary considerably, which is why particularly unusual multi-headed specimens are offered individually when they become available.

A Variegated Form of 'Lovely Rose'

'Lovely Rose' is generally classified horticulturally as a ×Graptoveria and is also frequently sold as Echeveria 'Lovely Rose'. Its precise parentage has not been reliably established, so we prefer not to assign unconfirmed parents to either the regular or variegated form.

We also grow the regular Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' and Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' Monstrose, a considerably larger-growing form with a different growth habit and distinctive silk variegation.

Growing Graptoveria 'Lovely Rose' Variegated

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and can encourage stronger seasonal colouring. Because the cream and yellow portions of the leaves contain little or no chlorophyll, strongly variegated plants have less photosynthetic capacity than plants containing a greater proportion of green tissue.

Regular Variegation plants are relatively straightforward to grow under normal succulent conditions. Extreme Variegation plants require somewhat more attentive care and are better suited to growers with some experience cultivating succulents. Their reduced chlorophyll generally results in slower, less vigorous growth, and they benefit from careful attention to light, watering and nutrition to maintain strong growth and good condition.

Acclimatise plants gradually to stronger light and protect strongly variegated foliage from prolonged intense Australian summer afternoon sun, as pale cream and yellow tissue can be particularly susceptible to scorching. Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the mix continuously wet, particularly during cooler conditions.

During active growth, these plants benefit from regular feeding to support strong, healthy development, particularly the Extreme Variegation forms with their greatly reduced green tissue. In our nursery we feed them generously during active growth to keep the plants vigorous and looking their best. Use an appropriate fertiliser at a suitable concentration and adjust feeding according to the plant's growth, season and growing conditions.
