Pachyphytum ‘Apple Cheese’ is a cultivated succulent hybrid of Korean origin, reported in succulent cultivation as a cross between Pachyphytum oviferum ‘Cheese’ and Pachyphytum garciae ‘Green Apple’. It combines the exceptionally plump foliage associated with the ‘Cheese’ parent with the more tapered leaf tips and attractive seasonal colouring associated with ‘Green Apple’.

Plump, powdery foliage

The thick, fleshy leaves are densely arranged around the stems and range from pale blue-green and grey-green to soft pink. Each leaf is covered with a fine layer of farina, the natural powdery wax that produces the characteristic frosted appearance of many Pachyphytum. This protective coating is easily marked by handling, so plants are best handled as little as possible to preserve their natural finish.

Seasonal colour

One of the most attractive characteristics of ‘Apple Cheese’ is its changing foliage colour. Depending on light levels, temperature, season and growing conditions, the leaves may develop increasingly prominent pink, rose, apricot or reddish tones, particularly towards their tips. Plants in active growth or under softer light may appear considerably greener and more subdued.

Compact rosette growth

‘Apple Cheese’ develops fleshy rosettes on gradually elongating stems and can produce offsets as it matures, eventually forming attractive multi-headed plants. Like other Pachyphytum, its substantial leaves act as water-storage organs, allowing established plants to tolerate periods of relatively dry conditions.

Growing Pachyphytum ‘Apple Cheese’

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light to maintain compact growth and encourage stronger foliage colour. Some protection from intense Australian summer afternoon sun is advisable, particularly for plants grown in small pots. Water thoroughly when required, then allow the growing medium to dry well before watering again. Avoid prolonged wet conditions around the roots and keep water from regularly collecting within the rosettes.
