Pachyphytum ‘Trumpet’ Fat Leaf is a distinctive succulent prized for its wonderfully thick, fleshy leaves, soft pastel colouring and unusual sculptural form. Its chunky foliage ranges from sea green and blue-green through to beautiful shades of peach, apricot and pink, with stronger reddish tones developing around the tips and margins under favourable conditions.
About Pachyphytum ‘Trumpet’ Fat Leaf
Pachyphytum ‘Trumpet’ Fat Leaf has exceptionally plump leaves with a curved to slightly distorted form that gives each plant plenty of individual character. The foliage is covered with a fine powdery coating known as farina, which helps protect the leaves and contributes to their soft, almost frosted appearance.
One of this succulent’s most attractive characteristics is its changing colour. During active growth or under gentler conditions, plants may appear predominantly pale green to blue-green. With increased light, cooler temperatures and other seasonal influences, the leaves can develop warm peach, orange-pink and rosy tones with deeper red highlights. Colour will therefore naturally vary throughout the year and between individual plants.
As plants mature, they develop sturdy stems and may gradually branch to form attractive clusters of chunky foliage. This combination of unusual leaf shape and changing pastel colour makes ‘Trumpet’ particularly appealing in decorative pots, succulent bowls and mixed collections.
Light & Position
Provide plenty of bright light and some direct sun to encourage compact growth and stronger colouring. In hotter parts of Australia, protection from intense afternoon summer sun is beneficial, particularly for plants that have not yet been acclimatised to stronger light.
Good airflow is also important, especially during prolonged cool or wet periods. If moving a plant into substantially brighter conditions, increase its sun exposure gradually to reduce the risk of leaf scorch.
Watering & Soil
Like other thick-leaved Pachyphytum, ‘Trumpet’ stores considerable moisture in its foliage and is highly drought tolerant once established. Water thoroughly and then allow the potting mix to dry before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots continually damp, particularly during cooler weather when growth and water use may slow.
A very free-draining succulent mix is ideal. Containers should have adequate drainage holes so excess water can escape readily and air can circulate around the root system.
Growth & Flowers
With time, Pachyphytum ‘Trumpet’ Fat Leaf develops into a wonderfully sculptural specimen, with older plants capable of producing branching stems and multiple heads. Mature plants may also send up slender flower stems carrying small bell-shaped blooms in shades of pink, red or purple.
Its manageable growth habit makes it particularly well suited to pots and smaller succulent displays, while established specimens can become impressive feature plants in their own right.
