Adromischus cristatus 'Indian Clubs'

Adromischus cristatus var. schonlandii ‘Indian Clubs’ is a compact South African succulent distinguished by its thick, club-shaped leaves. The foliage is typically green to grey-green and can develop burgundy, reddish-brown and purple colouring towards the tips, sometimes accompanied by darker mottling across the leaf surface.

Distinctive Club-Shaped Leaves

The fleshy leaves narrow considerably towards their attachment to the stem before widening through the middle and upper portion, producing the characteristic club-like shape behind the common name ‘Indian Clubs’. The leaves have a finely textured, slightly sticky surface and can vary naturally from relatively rounded forms to longer, more tapered shapes.

Colour changes considerably with season, light and growing conditions. Plants may remain predominantly green during periods of softer growth, while brighter conditions can produce deep burgundy or purplish colouring towards the leaf tips and margins, together with variable reddish mottling.

Compact Growth & Aerial Roots

Adromischus cristatus var. schonlandii is naturally dwarf and much branched, gradually forming dense rounded clusters. The short stems can develop fine brownish, coir-like aerial roots, a characteristic feature of the Adromischus cristatus group. These roots may be largely concealed beneath the closely arranged foliage on compact plants.

Established plants can produce slender upright flower stems during summer and autumn. The small tubular flowers are predominantly white to pale in colour and are carried well above the foliage.

A Distinct Botanical Variety

Adromischus cristatus var. schonlandii is an accepted botanical variety native to South Africa's Eastern Cape. It is a naturally restricted habitat specialist found in rocky, often sheltered cliff and outcrop environments.

It was originally described in 1929 as Cotyledon schonlandii and was later treated as Adromischus schonlandii. Botanist Hellmut Toelken subsequently placed it within the variable Adromischus cristatus complex as var. schonlandii, the classification currently accepted by Kew.

Growing Adromischus cristatus var. schonlandii ‘Indian Clubs’

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and can encourage stronger burgundy and purplish colouring towards the leaf tips. Plants should be acclimatised gradually before exposure to intense direct sun.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cooler conditions. The thick succulent leaves provide substantial water storage, allowing established plants to tolerate periods of dryness.

Please note: From our experience growing, handling and shipping this variety of Adromischus, we consider it well suited to shipping. However, individual leaves can occasionally detach if the plant is physically disturbed during transit or unpacking. A small amount of leaf drop can therefore occur and does not in itself indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

In the wild, leaf detachment and subsequent rooting is a natural means of vegetative reproduction in Adromischus, helping the plants reproduce and persist in their natural habitat. If leaves become detached from your plant, simply lay the healthy leaves on the surface of a free-draining succulent mix in bright, protected light. New roots and shoots will often develop from the base of the leaf over the following weeks. Once roots and new growth begin to develop, gently nestle them into the growing medium and allow the new plant to establish.
