Adromischus marianae f. alveolatus is a compact, slow-growing form of the highly variable Adromischus marianiae group, distinguished by its thick, strongly textured leaves. The foliage is typically green to grey-green and can develop yellow, bronze, pinkish or reddish tones according to season, light and growing conditions.

Deeply Textured Foliage

The fleshy leaves are relatively short and robust, reaching approximately 3.5 cm long and 2 cm wide. Their most characteristic feature is the conspicuously rough, irregular surface, formed by numerous raised areas and depressions. Leaves vary from broadly obovate to more tapered forms and may develop a shallow channel along the upper surface.

Colour can vary considerably between plants and through the seasons. New growth may emerge fresh green, while mature leaves can range through grey-green, yellow-green and bronze, sometimes developing pink, red or brownish colouring towards the tips. The irregular surface texture accentuates these changes in colour and gives mature plants their characteristic sculptured appearance.

Growth & Flowers

Adromischus marianae f. alveolatus develops short, sparsely branching stems and remains naturally compact. Growth is relatively slow, with new leaves concentrated around the active growing points and older plants gradually producing additional branches.

Established plants can produce slender upright flower stems during the warmer months. The small tubular flowers are yellowish-green towards the base, with green to maroon colouring towards the outer portions of the flower.

A South African Form & Its Taxonomy

Plants traditionally known as f. alveolatus originate from the arid north-western Cape region of South Africa, including Little Namaqualand, where members of the Adromischus marianiae group occur in rocky habitats.

This plant was originally described as Adromischus alveolatus and was later treated as Adromischus marianiae f. alveolatus. Under current Kew classification, the name is included as a synonym of the accepted Adromischus marianiae var. immaculatus. The name alveolatus remains useful in cultivation for identifying this particularly rough-textured form, so we retain the familiar horticultural name Adromischus marianae f. alveolatus for our plants.

Growing Adromischus marianae f. alveolatus

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and can encourage stronger yellow, bronze and reddish foliage tones, although plants should be acclimatised gradually before exposure to intense direct sun.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid prolonged waterlogging, particularly during cooler conditions. The thick succulent leaves provide substantial water storage, allowing established plants to tolerate periods of dryness.

Please note: From our experience growing, handling and shipping this variety of Adromischus, we consider it well suited to shipping. However, individual leaves can occasionally detach if the plant is physically disturbed during transit or unpacking. A small amount of leaf drop can therefore occur and does not in itself indicate that the plant is unhealthy.

In the wild, leaf detachment and subsequent rooting is a natural means of vegetative reproduction in Adromischus, helping the plants reproduce and persist in their natural habitat. If leaves become detached from your plant, simply lay the healthy leaves on the surface of a free-draining succulent mix in bright, protected light. New roots and shoots will often develop from the base of the leaf over the following weeks. Once roots and new growth begin to develop, gently nestle them into the growing medium and allow the new plant to establish.

Seasonal Colour & Plant Variation

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.

The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
