Agave isthmensis 'Oji Raijin'

Agave isthmensis ‘Oji Raijin’ is a miniature variegated Agave with an exceptionally compact, geometric rosette and bold creamy-white central variegation. Also known as Variegated Dwarf Butterfly Agave and ‘Mediopicta Alba’, it combines the architectural character of an Agave with a remarkably small growth habit, making it particularly appealing to collectors and ideal for container growing.

Distinctive White-Centred Variegation

The thick, broad leaves are powdery blue-green to grey-green, with prominent cream to creamy-white variegation running through the centre. Rather than appearing as simple straight stripes, the pale sections can vary considerably from leaf to leaf, producing irregular sweeps and patches of colour that give each rosette its own individual pattern.

The leaves are short, broad and strongly cupped, creating the tight, almost sculpted appearance visible in our plants. Small reddish-brown marginal teeth contrast beautifully against the cooler foliage, while each leaf finishes with a sharp reddish terminal spine. Viewed from above, the overlapping leaves form an especially attractive symmetrical rosette.

A True Miniature Agave

This is one of the genuinely compact Agave cultivars. Mature individual rosettes generally remain around 10 cm across, although growing conditions and individual plants can influence their eventual size. As plants mature they can produce offsets from around the rosette, gradually developing into an attractive cluster of miniature heads.

The cultivar is widely circulated under the longer name Agave isthmensis ‘Ohi Raijin Shiro Nakafu’ and is also known as ‘Mediopicta Alba’. While the species Agave isthmensis originates in southern Mexico, this distinctive variegated form is regarded as a horticultural selection associated with Japanese cultivation.

Growing ‘Oji Raijin’ in Australia

Its naturally compact growth makes ‘Oji Raijin’ particularly well suited to decorative pots, collector displays, succulent bowls and protected rockeries. Use a very free-draining succulent mix and water thoroughly before allowing the growing medium to dry well between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots continually damp, particularly during cooler weather.

Bright light helps maintain its compact form and attractive blue-green colour, but the substantial areas of pale variegation contain less protective pigment than the green portions of the leaves. In Australian conditions, protection from intense afternoon summer sun is advisable, particularly during heatwaves or when moving a plant from a more sheltered position. Morning sun, filtered sun or bright conditions with protection during the hottest part of the day are excellent options.

Slow growing, beautifully proportioned and striking even at a small size, ‘Oji Raijin’ is an excellent Agave for collectors who appreciate intricate foliage and strong architectural form without requiring the space needed for many larger Agave species.
