Crassula 'Barklyi'

Crassula barklyi, commonly known as Rattlesnake Buttons or Banded Finger, is an extraordinary dwarf succulent prized for its tightly stacked leaves and almost sculpted appearance. Native to the arid regions of north-western South Africa and southern Namibia, this slow-growing species forms short, upright to spreading columns composed of densely overlapping leaves that almost completely conceal the stems.

Remarkable Stacked Foliage

The tightly overlapping leaves range from soft green and grey-green to grey-brown, often patterned with fine darker green, reddish or bronze markings that become more noticeable under brighter light. Their precise arrangement creates the distinctive segmented, cone-like columns that make Crassula barklyi immediately recognisable.

Each leaf has a translucent membranous margin edged with a dense fringe of tiny hairs, known botanically as cilia. Remarkably, these fine hairs can help the plant capture and absorb moisture from dew and rain—an ingenious adaptation for survival in its naturally dry environment.

Compact, Slow-Growing & Highly Collectable

Crassula barklyi is naturally miniature and slow growing. Young shoots begin as rounded, tightly enclosed buds before gradually elongating into the characteristic finger-like columns. As plants mature they branch from the base and slowly develop into compact clusters, creating an increasingly intricate specimen with age.

Small Fragrant Flowers

Mature plants may produce tiny creamy-white flowers in compact clusters at the tips of the stems. Partly nestled among the upper leaves, the flowers are understated compared with the extraordinary foliage, but they are pleasantly fragrant and add another fascinating feature to this distinctive species.

Growing Crassula barklyi

Grow Crassula barklyi in a very free-draining succulent mix and provide plenty of bright light with good airflow. Bright conditions help maintain its compact growth and attractive foliage markings, although plants should be acclimatised gradually and protected from excessively harsh Australian summer afternoon sun where scorching is likely.

Water thoroughly when required, then allow the growing medium to dry well before watering again. Its compact structure can trap moisture between the tightly overlapping leaves, so continually wet soil, excessive humidity and poor airflow should be avoided. Watering around the soil rather than repeatedly soaking the foliage is particularly useful during cool weather.

Growth is naturally slow, so heavy feeding is unnecessary. Relatively lean growing conditions help preserve the tight, compact form that gives this species so much of its character. Protect plants from prolonged or severe frost and reduce watering when growth slows.
