Echeveria 'Cute Bean' clumps

Echeveria 'Cute Bean' is a compact cultivated succulent known for its plump blue-green foliage, soft pink to red seasonal colouring and its tendency to develop substantial multi-rosette clumps as it matures. It is widely grown as a Korean hybrid, although reliable documentation of its precise parentage and original breeder appears to be limited.

Plump Blue-Green Foliage

The thick, fleshy leaves are rounded to somewhat elongated and are covered with a soft powdery coating of natural farina. Their base colour is typically pale blue-green to mint green, with the outer portions of the leaves developing attractive pink, coral and deeper reddish tones under suitable light and seasonal conditions.

Colour can change considerably throughout the year. Plants may appear predominantly blue-green during periods of active growth, while stronger light, cooler temperatures and other seasonal conditions can bring out considerably more pink and red pigmentation. The natural farina should be handled as little as possible, as fingerprints and rubbing can permanently mark the powdery surface of individual leaves.

Clumping Growth

'Cute Bean' readily produces offsets around established growth and can gradually develop into an impressive multi-rosette clump. Individual rosettes remain relatively compact, while repeated offsetting creates the dense, rounded specimens characteristic of mature plants.

The mature plant shown in the first image demonstrates the substantial clump this variety can develop with age. Individual plants will naturally vary in the number and arrangement of offsets according to maturity and growing conditions.

A Cultivated Echeveria

'Cute Bean' is widely circulated in succulent cultivation as a Korean hybrid. However, reliable published information documenting its original breeder and precise parentage is limited, so we prefer not to assign an unconfirmed parentage to the cultivar.

Its combination of thick leaves, compact rosettes and strong offsetting habit has made it a well-established cultivar in succulent collections internationally.

Growing Echeveria 'Cute Bean'

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix in a bright position with good airflow. Good light helps maintain compact growth and encourages stronger pink to red seasonal colouring. Acclimatise plants gradually before exposure to intense direct sun, and provide some protection from prolonged Australian summer afternoon sun where necessary.

Water thoroughly when required and allow the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the mix continuously wet, particularly during cooler conditions. Occasional light feeding during active growth can be beneficial, but excessive fertilising can encourage softer, more elongated growth.
