Echeveria Jelly Jam

Echeveria ‘Jelly Jam’ is an unusual collector Echeveria best known for the irregular pink, red and burgundy markings that develop across its fleshy leaves. These distinctive speckles and blotches can appear almost painted onto the leaf surface, giving each rosette its own individual pattern.

Also encountered in collections under names such as ‘Bloody Yan’ and ‘Bloody’, Jelly Jam appears to be a cultivated Echeveria hybrid rather than a naturally occurring species. Its exact parentage, breeder and date of introduction do not appear to have been reliably documented.

Colour & Growth

Jelly Jam forms compact rosettes of thick, softly coloured leaves, typically ranging from grey-green and blue-green through to warmer pinkish tones. Its characteristic red to burgundy markings are variable and become much more pronounced when the plant is grown in good light and exposed to cooler seasonal conditions.

Like many colourful Echeverias, its appearance changes noticeably through the year. During warmer periods or under softer light, new growth may be predominantly green and the darker markings can become less obvious. As conditions become cooler and the plant develops stronger colour, the speckling and blotches can intensify dramatically. This seasonal variation is a natural part of the plant’s character.

Growing Jelly Jam

Grow Echeveria ‘Jelly Jam’ in a bright, well-ventilated position with a very free-draining succulent mix. Good light helps maintain compact growth and encourages its best colouring, although plants should be acclimatised gradually before exposure to strong summer sun.

Allow the growing mix to dry well between waterings and take particular care during cool or prolonged wet weather. Jelly Jam can be less forgiving of excess moisture than some of the more robust Echeveria varieties, so good drainage and avoiding consistently damp soil are especially important.
