Echeveria setosa (Mexican Firecracker)
Echeveria setosa (Mexican Firecracker) is a distinctive, clump-forming succulent admired for its soft, bristly texture and compact, symmetrical form. Native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico, this species develops dense, stemless rosettes of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves, each coated in fine white hairs that give a silvery-green, velvety appearance. In bright light, the leaf tips may blush pink, adding further seasonal interest and colour variation.
During late spring through summer, mature plants send up slender, arching flower stalks bearing clusters of tubular blooms in vivid red with contrasting yellow tips—hence the common name “Mexican Firecracker.” These nectar-rich flowers are not only visually striking but can also attract pollinators to your garden.
Typically growing to around 10–15 cm in diameter, Echeveria setosa remains relatively small but gradually forms attractive offsets, creating a clustered display over time. This makes it well suited to shallow pots, decorative containers, or rock garden plantings where its unique texture can be appreciated up close.
Best grown in a free-draining cactus or succulent mix, this species thrives in bright conditions, ideally full sun to light shade. Adequate sunlight encourages compact growth and enhances leaf colouration. Watering should follow a soak-and-dry approach—allowing the soil to dry completely between thorough waterings—to prevent root rot. While drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional deep watering during active growth.
In Australian conditions, Echeveria setosa prefers protection from heavy frost and prolonged wet periods. It is well suited to outdoor growing in milder climates, or can be easily maintained in pots where conditions can be controlled. Low-maintenance and easy to propagate from offsets, it is a rewarding addition for both collectors and beginners alike.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
