Euphorbia meloformis
Euphorbia meloformis, also known as Melon Spurge, is a fascinating, globe-shaped succulent native to South Africa’s Eastern Cape, where it can be found in several distinct populations near Port Elizabeth, Grahamstown, and Peddie. This hardy species belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and thrives in arid, well-drained environments, favouring mineral soils and plenty of bright light. Its distinctive form—typically spherical to slightly cylindrical stems with 8 to 12 defined ribs—gives it a unique visual appeal that earns its common name.
The plant’s smooth green to purple-banded surface may resemble Euphorbia obesa, but it is easily distinguished by its persistent flower stalks. These slender peduncles reach up to 6 cm and bear tiny yellow flowers, which dry and remain on the plant, adding to its unusual texture. Mature plants may reach around 20 cm in height and 15 cm in diameter, often growing as solitary individuals but occasionally producing offsets at the base.
While Euphorbia meloformis is relatively low maintenance, it appreciates regular but sparing watering in summer, with dry conditions over winter. It tolerates moderate shade but thrives best in a sunny position, provided it's acclimatised gradually to prevent sunburn. As a dioecious species, both male and female plants are required for seed production. Propagation is typically achieved through seed, with flowering generally occurring after 4–6 years.
Closely related forms such as Euphorbia meloformis f. cristata (crested form) and the taller, bristlier subspecies valida offer further diversity within this intriguing group.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
