Orostachys boehmeri – Variegated Chinese Dunce Cap

Orostachys boehmeri – Variegated Chinese Dunce Cap is a particularly attractive variegated form of this small spreading succulent, producing compact rosettes patterned in shades of green, blue-green, cream and pale yellow. Numerous slender stolons can radiate from established plants, carrying new rosettes at their tips and gradually creating a colourful spreading colony.

Changing variegation and colour

Each rosette develops its own balance of green and pale variegated tissue, so no two plants are exactly alike. Colour and the prominence of the variegation can also change as plants develop and in response to season and growing conditions.

The pale areas contain less chlorophyll than the green portions of the foliage and can be more sensitive to intense sunlight. Bright light helps maintain compact growth and attractive colouring, but some protection from harsh Australian afternoon summer sun is advisable, particularly for strongly variegated rosettes.

Rosettes carried on spreading stolons

One of the most appealing characteristics of Orostachys boehmeri is the way mature plants send out slender stolons, with small new rosettes developing at their tips. These can spread beyond the original plant and trail attractively around the edge of a pot as the colony develops.

New rosettes can differ noticeably in their degree of variegation. Some may be strongly patterned while others contain considerably more green. Occasionally a shoot can revert completely or predominantly to the regular green form.

Flowers and the Orostachys life cycle

Individual mature rosettes are monocarpic, meaning that a rosette that flowers will eventually die after completing its flowering cycle. The numerous younger rosettes and offsets produced by an established plant can continue growing, so flowering of one rosette does not necessarily mean the loss of the entire colony.

When sufficiently mature, a flowering rosette elongates and develops a distinctive upright flower spike carrying numerous small pale flowers. Flowering is not something every young rosette will do, and plants can remain vegetative while continuing to produce new rosettes around them.

From Orostachys iwarenge var. boehmeri to Orostachys boehmeri

Orostachys boehmeri is also widely known in cultivation by its former botanical name, Orostachys iwarenge var. boehmeri, and plants are still frequently offered for sale under that name. Current botanical classification accepts Orostachys boehmeri as a species in its own right, which is the name we now use for our plants.

Although the name has changed, it refers to the same familiar plant. The species is native to Japan and the Russian Far East, including Primorye and Sakhalin. Despite the long-established common name Chinese Dunce Cap, China is not included in its currently documented native range.

The variegation is a cultivated characteristic and does not form part of the botanical definition of Orostachys boehmeri. This is why reverted green growth remains Orostachys boehmeri even when it no longer displays the variegation of the parent plant.

Growing variegated Orostachys boehmeri

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with good airflow and plenty of bright light. Some direct sun can encourage compact growth and attractive colour, but strongly variegated foliage should be protected from prolonged intense Australian afternoon summer sun.

Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet. Stolons can be left to spread naturally around the parent plant or individual rosettes can be separated once sufficiently established for propagation.
