Pachyphytum fittkaui
Pachyphytum fittkaui is an impressive, large-growing succulent prized for its elegant, finger-like foliage and graceful shrubby habit. Native to the rocky cliffs of eastern Guanajuato and southern San Luis Potosí in Mexico, it grows naturally on steep, south-facing slopes at elevations of 1,200–2,100 metres. First discovered in 1968 by the German priest and botanist Hans Werner Fittkau, this distinctive species was later named in his honour. Its combination of architectural form and striking foliage has made it a favourite among collectors of unusual Pachyphytum species.
Unlike many compact members of the genus, Pachyphytum fittkaui develops thick, branching stems that can eventually reach around 1 metre in length, becoming semi-trailing or pendent with age. Large rosettes, up to 20 cm across, are formed at the stem tips and are packed with fleshy, elongated leaves coated in a soft natural bloom. The foliage ranges from deep green to bluish-green and often develops attractive violet-red highlights when grown in bright sunlight, adding seasonal colour and enhancing its sculptural appearance.
From late winter, mature plants produce elegant arching flower stalks up to 55 cm long, carrying attractive bell-shaped blooms. The unusually large green sepals clasp rich rose-pink petals, creating a distinctive floral display that contrasts beautifully against the glaucous foliage and provides welcome colour during the cooler months.
This species thrives in a free-draining succulent potting mix and performs best in a sunny position where its compact growth and colourful foliage can fully develop. It tolerates light frost to around -1°C if kept dry but is happiest in Australia's mild temperate, Mediterranean and frost-free climates. Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between waterings, while reducing moisture during periods of dormancy.
Propagation is remarkably easy from stem cuttings and leaves, with even fallen leaves often producing roots and new plantlets beneath the parent. Its impressive size, pendulous habit and ease of cultivation make Pachyphytum fittkaui an outstanding choice for decorative pots, elevated planters, hanging displays and collectors seeking a bold yet easy-care succulent.
