Gasteraloe 'Green Ice' is a beautiful and unique succulent that is a hybrid between Gasteria 'Little Warty' and Gonialoe variegata (formerly known as Aloe variegata). The plant forms compact rosettes of toothless, thick and smooth leaves that are marked with grey dots and elongated stripes of icy light green and dark green, providing a lovely contrast. The rosettes can grow up to 30 cm in diameter and produce offsets around the base when mature, The tubular flowers are red in the lower half, white above, and have green midstripes, usually appearing in summer or several times a year.
This plant is often grouped with Haworthias due to similar cultural requirements, and they are both attractive, small succulents that can tolerate more shade than other succulents, making them suitable as houseplants. Gasteraloe 'Green Ice' is susceptible to fungal infections caused by too much humidity or water on the leaves, but they have a natural defense mechanism to combat the invading organism and seal off the wounded spot. It can thrive in any place where Haworthia and Aloe do well.
Gasteraloe 'Green Ice' is slow-growing and shallow-rooted, making it suitable for growing in small clusters in wide, shallow dishes. Over time, clusters will naturally enlarge as the mother plant sends off small plantlets. When the cluster has outgrown its dish, it can be repotted into a new wide and shallow dish with fresh potting soil in the spring or early summer. This is also the time to take offsets for propagation.
This plant is a garden hybrid, produced in nurseries, and it prefers a very porous potting mix to increase drainage. It needs light shade to shade, but will tolerate full sun part of the day. During the hot summer months, the soil should be kept moist but not overly wet. The plant is frost hardy to -1°C or less, making it suitable for growing in most areas of Australia.
Overall, Gasteraloe 'Green Ice' is a stunning and unusual succulent that is easy to grow and maintain, making it an excellent choice for succulent enthusiasts of all levels.
