Sedum pachyphyllum, commonly known as Blue Jelly Beans, is a distinctive Mexican succulent recognised for its plump, club-shaped leaves and soft blue-green colouring. The rounded leaves are covered with a fine powdery bloom and often develop contrasting pink to red tips, giving established plants their characteristic jelly-bean appearance.
Plump blue-green foliage
The fleshy leaves are densely arranged along branching succulent stems, with each leaf narrowing towards the base and becoming broader and rounded towards the tip. A natural coating of powdery farina gives the foliage its silvery blue-green appearance and helps create the soft, almost pastel quality for which this species is known.
Under brighter light and seasonal stress, particularly during cooler weather, the leaf tips can develop increasingly strong pink, coral and red tones. Plants grown in softer light generally remain greener, so colour can change noticeably throughout the year.
Branching and spreading growth
Sedum pachyphyllum develops into a freely branching succulent subshrub, with stems gradually elongating and spreading as the plant matures. Older stems may root where they contact the growing medium, allowing established plants to form broader clumps over time.
This naturally spreading habit makes Blue Jelly Beans particularly effective in pots, rockeries and mixed succulent plantings, where mature stems can gently spill over surrounding rocks or the edges of containers.
Bright yellow flowers
Established plants can produce clusters of bright yellow, star-shaped flowers during the warmer growing season. The flowers are carried above the foliage on slender stems and provide a strong contrast against the blue-green leaves and colourful tips.
Growing Sedum pachyphyllum
Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light. Good light encourages compact growth and stronger foliage colour, although some protection from intense Australian summer afternoon sun can be beneficial, particularly for plants grown in small pots.
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings, and reduce watering during colder periods. Avoid prolonged wet conditions around the roots. The species also propagates readily from stem cuttings and mature leaves, making older plants easy to maintain and renew as their stems lengthen.
