Sempervivum cantabricum ssp. urbionense, also known in cultivation as Sempervivum cantabricum ssp. urbionense f/ Picos de Urbion, is a cold-hardy, rosette-forming succulent native to the rugged alpine slopes of the Picos de Urbión in northern Spain. Belonging to the Crassulaceae family, this resilient subspecies is adapted to thrive in rocky outcrops and high-altitude environments, where it endures snow, frost, and intense sun exposure—making it perfectly suited for Australian gardens in temperate to cool regions with well-drained soil.

This plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes composed of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves. These leaves change colour dramatically through the seasons—from fresh green during the warmer months to rich reds and even pinkish tones in winter and spring. The tips of the leaves often feature a subtle contrasting hue, adding further ornamental interest. Its compact form and colour-shifting habit make it an attractive choice for rockeries, troughs, alpine displays, and container arrangements.

Sempervivum cantabricum ssp. urbionense propagates easily by producing stoloniferous offsets, often referred to as “chicks,” around the main rosette or “hen.” These can be left to form an interwoven mat or detached for propagation. In mid to late summer, mature rosettes may send up flower stalks bearing clusters of star-shaped pink to red blooms—a striking but terminal event, as flowering rosettes will die back after blooming. However, the surrounding offsets ensure the plant’s continued growth.

To perform at its best, this Sempervivum requires full sun and gritty, free-draining soil. It is highly frost-tolerant, withstanding sub-zero temperatures and even snow. Overwatering should be avoided, especially in humid or wet climates. Its alpine origin gives it a natural toughness, making it ideal for gardeners seeking hardy yet beautiful, low-maintenance succulents.
