Sempervivum 'Edge of Night' (multi)
Sempervivum 'Edge of Night' is a striking houseleek cultivar bred by renowned hybridizer Kevin C. Vaughn in the United States. Introduced in 1977 or 1987, this hybrid of Sempervivum 'Jungle Shadows' x Sempervivum 'Grey Lady' is celebrated for its deep purple to almost black foliage, particularly in cooler conditions. The long, narrow leaves are coated in a fine layer of epicuticular wax, giving the rosettes a distinctive watermarked appearance.
Like all Sempervivums, 'Edge of Night' is exceptionally hardy, originating from a genus well-adapted to the harsh, rocky landscapes of the Alps, Pyrenees, Dolomites, Caucasus, and Carpathians. This makes it an ideal choice for rock gardens, green roofs, and container displays. In full sun, its colours intensify, while cooler temperatures enhance its dark pigmentation. During the active growing season in spring and summer, it readily produces offsets, forming dense clusters over time.
This monocarpic succulent occasionally sends up a tall flower stalk crowned with star-shaped pink or white blooms. While the flowering rosette will die after blooming, the surrounding offsets ensure its continued growth. Highly frost-tolerant, 'Edge of Night' withstands sub-zero temperatures and benefits from a protective layer of winter snow.
To cultivate Sempervivum 'Edge of Night' successfully, plant it in well-draining, gritty soil and water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Though drought-tolerant, it appreciates occasional moisture during the growing season. Avoid excessive humidity and prolonged wet conditions to prevent rot. With its dramatic colouring and resilient nature, this cultivar is a standout in any succulent collection.
