Aeonium 'Red Fuji' Variegated, also known as Roscoff, Blush, Anne Genasi, and Marnier Lapostolle Variegated, is a visually stunning hybrid celebrated for its vibrant, ever-changing colours. Thought to have originated in France, its lineage is not fully determined but may involve Aeonium volkerii and Aeonium cuneatum. Its broad, ocean-green leaves showcase deep red and burgundy tones with striking purple streaks, enhanced by creamy or pale yellow variegation along the margins. Seasonal shifts and growing conditions can bring even more dramatic colour transformations.
This hybrid forms rosettes up to 15 cm in diameter on short, sturdy stems that can grow to 50 cm tall. As it matures, it produces plentiful offsets, creating a dense, shrubby cluster. In autumn, its tall flower stems burst into clusters of bright yellow blooms. Like all Aeoniums, 'Red Fuji' Variegated is monocarpic, meaning the flowering rosette will die after blooming. However, its offsets will continue to thrive, ensuring the plant’s longevity. Removing spent flower heads helps conserve the plant's energy.
Adaptable and hardy, this Aeonium thrives in full sun to partial shade and is perfect for gardens, borders, rockeries, or pots. Indoors, it needs a sunny position to maintain its compact shape and vivid colours. It prefers well-draining soil and moderate watering year-round, growing most vigorously during cooler months. To enhance its hues, opt for a "tough love" approach with low-nitrogen fertilisers and minimal soil. A striking centrepiece for any Australian garden!
