Crassula lanuginosa var. pachystemon 'David' Variegated is a striking succulent that stands out with its unique variegation, featuring random streaks of yellow along the edges and midleaf of its small but thick, fleshy leaves. A rare variation of the standard 'David' form, this variegated beauty enhances the colour changes seen in the regular plant, transforming its hues to a mix of green, yellow, orange, and red, especially under stress or during seasonal shifts. This slow-growing version offers a stunning display of vibrant colours, often with multiple shades appearing simultaneously on the same plant.
Originating from South Africa, Crassula lanuginosa var. pachystemon 'David' was first collected by David Cumming in the 1980s, and it was later named in his honour by Rudolf Schulz. The variegated form retains the compact, low-growing nature of the original, with fleshy, prostrate branches growing up to 10 cm in length. The plant's disk-shaped leaves, covered in fine white hairs, add a soft, textured appeal, while its white flowers appear in clusters during winter and early summer.
This hardy succulent thrives in full sun to partial shade, though it benefits from morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent leaf burn. It requires well-draining soil and should be watered using the "soak and dry" method. While slightly slower-growing than its non-variegated counterpart, Crassula lanuginosa var. pachystemon 'David' Variegated remains a perfect choice for succulent enthusiasts seeking a rare, eye-catching addition to their collection.
