Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' Variegated

Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' Variegated is a striking variegated form of the well-known 'Cubic Frost' hybrid, combining its unusual geometric rosette with irregular areas of cream, yellow and pale green. Depending on season and growing conditions, the foliage can also develop beautiful shades of pink, lilac, purple and blue-grey.

Geometric rosettes and changing colour

The thick, fleshy leaves curve distinctly upwards, creating the sculptural, almost angular rosette for which 'Cubic Frost' is known. Variegation varies considerably from leaf to leaf and from plant to plant, with cream and yellow areas contrasting against the cooler underlying foliage.

Colour can change noticeably through the seasons. Strong light and cooler conditions can encourage richer pink, lilac and purple tones, while plants in active growth may display softer blue-grey, green and cream colouring. As with many variegated succulents, each plant develops its own individual pattern.

The origins of 'Cubic Frost'

The original Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' is a documented hybrid bred by Renee O'Connell in California from Echeveria 'Doppler' and a proprietary Echeveria identified as 'R-21'. The cross was made in 2011, with 'Cubic Frost' selected for its distinctive uplifted foliage, geometric rosette and attractive lilac colouring.

The plant offered here is the variegated form of 'Cubic Frost'. While the parentage of the original cultivar is well documented, the precise origin of the later variegated form does not appear to have been formally recorded, so we do not attribute it to a particular breeder or nursery.

Growth and flowering

'Cubic Frost' is naturally capable of producing offsets and developing into attractive multi-rosette plants with age. The original cultivar is also known to flower readily, producing upright flower stems above the foliage. The variegated form can be slower growing, particularly where individual rosettes carry a high proportion of pale variegation.

Growing Echeveria 'Cubic Frost' Variegated

Grow in a free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light to maintain compact growth and good colour. Morning sun and bright filtered light are particularly useful during the hotter months, while some protection from intense Australian afternoon summer sun can help prevent scorching of the paler variegated areas.

Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings. Avoid keeping the roots continuously wet. Because the amount of variegation differs naturally between plants, growth rate and seasonal colour will also vary from one specimen to another.
