These cuttings are generally available during the warmer months when the plants are actively producing plentiful new offsets. Many offsets naturally develop fine roots while still attached to or growing around the parent plant, so some of the cuttings you receive may already have roots beginning to form.

About Orostachys boehmeri

Orostachys boehmeri is a small, freely spreading succulent that produces compact rosettes and numerous slender stolons, with new rosettes developing at their tips. The variegated form displays an attractive mixture of green, blue-green, cream and pale yellow, with the amount and pattern of variegation varying naturally between individual rosettes.

Colour can also change with season and growing conditions. Established plants can develop attractive pinkish tones under suitable conditions, while plants that have become dry may temporarily appear duller. Once actively growing and adequately hydrated, the foliage generally becomes fuller and its variegation more apparent.

New offsets can vary considerably. Some may be strongly variegated, others predominantly green, and occasional growth can revert completely to the regular green form.

Growing from cuttings

Variegated Chinese Dunce Cap is particularly easy to establish from its small offsets. Unlike a freshly cut succulent stem, these offsets do not normally require an extended callusing period before planting, and many already have fine roots developing when removed from the parent plant.

For best results, we recommend initially planting the offsets into a fine-textured growing medium such as seed-raising mix or coir fibre. Their first roots are generally small and close to the surface, so a finer medium retains moisture around these developing roots for longer than a coarse succulent mix and makes it considerably easier to keep the young plants adequately hydrated while they establish.

Keep the growing medium consistently lightly moist during this initial stage, but not waterlogged. A coarse, very free-draining succulent mix can also be used, but it may dry extremely quickly around the shallow roots and require much more frequent watering or misting. Once the offsets have developed a stronger root system and are actively growing, they can be transferred to or grown on in your normal succulent mix and watered in the same manner as established plants.

Keep newly planted offsets in bright, protected light rather than strong direct sun. Their relatively thin leaves and limited root system can lose moisture quickly before the plants are established, and intense hot sun can scorch or dehydrate them. Once well rooted and actively growing, they can gradually be introduced to brighter conditions.

Rosettes, stolons and new offsets

Once established, Orostachys boehmeri can multiply rapidly during active growth. Slender stolons spread out from established rosettes, producing new plants at their tips and gradually creating an attractive colony. These young rosettes can be left attached to develop naturally or separated for further propagation once sufficiently developed.

Individual mature rosettes are monocarpic, meaning that a rosette that flowers will eventually die after completing its flowering cycle. Established colonies can contain numerous younger rosettes and offsets, allowing the plant to continue after an older flowering rosette has finished.

Also known as Orostachys iwarenge var. boehmeri

Orostachys boehmeri is also widely known in cultivation by its former botanical name, Orostachys iwarenge var. boehmeri, and plants are still frequently offered for sale under that name. Current botanical classification accepts Orostachys boehmeri as a species in its own right, which is the name we now use for our plants.

Although the name has changed, it refers to the same familiar plant. The species is native to Japan and the Russian Far East, including Primorye and Sakhalin. Despite the long-established common name Chinese Dunce Cap, China is not included in its currently documented native range.

The variegation is a cultivated characteristic and does not form part of the botanical definition of Orostachys boehmeri. This is why completely reverted green growth remains Orostachys boehmeri even when it no longer displays the variegation of the parent plant.
