Crassula corallina

Crassula corallina, sometimes known as Coral Crassula, is a low-growing succulent native to southern Africa, occurring across parts of South Africa and Namibia. It develops into dense, spreading mats of intricately patterned foliage, with short branching stems and tiny fleshy leaves that give established plants a remarkably coral-like texture.

Distinctive textured foliage

The small, thick leaves are closely packed along the stems and are typically green to grey-green beneath a conspicuous white waxy covering. Their finely pitted, textured surface creates the frosted appearance characteristic of the species. Individual leaves are only around 5 mm long, making the intricate detail particularly noticeable when the plant is viewed at close range.

Low, spreading growth

Crassula corallina develops short, much-branched stems that may be upright at first before becoming spreading or prostrate. Stems can root where they contact the growing medium, allowing established plants to gradually form compact mats. In its natural habitat the species occurs in dry, rocky environments, including quartzite outcrops, where its low growth habit is well suited to exposed conditions and shallow soils.

Small cream-coloured flowers

Flowering stems develop from the ends of the branches and carry clusters of very small cream to white flowers. The individual flowers are urn-shaped, with petals joined towards the base and recurving near their tips. Although relatively inconspicuous compared with the foliage, they add another interesting detail to mature plants.

Growing Crassula corallina

Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix with plenty of bright light and good airflow. Its naturally compact form and pale waxy foliage develop well under strong light, although protection from intense Australian summer afternoon sun may be beneficial, particularly for plants in small pots. Water thoroughly when required, allowing the growing medium to dry between waterings, and avoid prolonged wet conditions around the roots.

Its naturally low, spreading habit makes Crassula corallina particularly suited to shallow containers, rockeries and mixed succulent displays where the unusual texture and fine detail of its foliage can be appreciated.
