Faucaria tigrina, commonly known as Tiger’s Jaw, is a small, clump-forming succulent native to the arid regions of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Belonging to the Aizoaceae family, this fascinating plant gets its name from the triangular leaves edged with soft, white, tooth-like projections that resemble a tiger’s open mouth. As it matures, the foliage can develop a silvery hue, adding a striking, textured contrast in any succulent display.
During the warmer months—most notably in spring and autumn—Faucaria tigrina produces brilliant golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers that open in bright sunlight. These blooms emerge from the heart of the rosette, adding cheerful bursts of colour against its sculptural leaves. Each plant typically grows around 10–15 cm tall and wide, forming tight, stemless rosettes that gradually spread into small clusters over time.
In cultivation, Tiger’s Jaw thrives in well-draining, gritty soil such as a cactus and succulent mix. It prefers full sun or bright light and should be watered sparingly, with the soil allowed to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering, particularly in winter, can easily lead to root rot. In Australia, it performs beautifully in pots, rock gardens, or xeriscape plantings, where it appreciates warmth and excellent air circulation. While it is drought-tolerant, it is not frost-hardy and should be protected from cold snaps or prolonged wet conditions.
With its striking, toothed leaves and sunny flowers, Faucaria tigrina is both ornamental and resilient—perfect for gardeners seeking a distinctive, low-maintenance plant that brings a touch of the exotic African desert to their Australian garden or indoor succulent collection.
