Aeonium sedifolium
Aeonium sedifolium is one of the most distinctive small-growing Aeonium species, forming miniature rosettes of plump, sticky green leaves marked with red to burgundy streaks. With age it develops a woody, intricately branched structure that can resemble a tiny succulent tree.
A Small Aeonium Species
Native to the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera, Aeonium sedifolium remains considerably smaller than the large-rosetted Aeoniums commonly seen in cultivation.
Its compact scale is a major part of its appeal. Numerous tiny rosettes develop along branching stems, eventually producing an aged, almost bonsai-like appearance that makes established specimens especially interesting.
Distinctive Sticky, Red-Marked Foliage
The small fleshy leaves are green to yellow-green and have a slightly sticky or glutinous surface. Reddish to burgundy markings can develop along the margins and through the leaves, becoming particularly attractive under good light and changing seasonal conditions.
This combination of miniature rosettes, plump foliage and intricate red markings gives the species a character quite unlike the broad, flat rosettes of many larger Aeoniums.
Variegated Form
An even more colourful version is available as Aeonium sedifolium Variegated. It retains the tiny rosettes and red markings of the species while adding cream, yellow and pink variegation.
Connection to Aeonium 'Bronze Medal'
Aeonium sedifolium also has an interesting horticultural connection with Aeonium 'Bronze Medal'. The complete parentage of 'Bronze Medal' is unknown, but its small red-marked rosettes, sticky foliage and compact habit strongly suggest A. sedifolium as one parent.
Growing Conditions
Grow in a bright position in a free-draining succulent mix. Like other Aeoniums, it is primarily a cooler-season grower and can slow considerably during hot, dry summer conditions. Water more cautiously during periods of reduced growth and avoid allowing the roots to remain waterlogged.
Its naturally compact growth makes A. sedifolium particularly well suited to pots, small succulent displays and collections where its intricate structure can be appreciated at close range.

Pickup is available in Seville, Yarra Valley VIC by appointment. Order online as normal and any shipping charge will be automatically refunded after collection, unless you would prefer to receive an additional plant of similar value instead.
