Aeonium 'Superbang' aka 'Oujiali' Variegated

Aeonium ‘Superbang’, also known as ‘Oujiali’ Variegated, is an exceptionally colourful branching Aeonium, prized for rosettes that can combine fresh green, cream, burgundy, near-black and brilliant red on the same plant. Few Aeonium change their appearance quite so dramatically as light, temperature, season and growth stage influence the foliage.

Extraordinary Seasonal Colour

One of the defining features of ‘Superbang’ is the broad darker zone through the centre of its leaves, contrasted by lighter variegated margins. During greener phases the rosettes can display lime to deeper green with cream or yellow-green variegation. Under brighter conditions the darker areas can intensify through chocolate and burgundy to almost black, while the lighter margins develop increasingly strong pink and red tones.

Our plants can become particularly striking when strongly coloured, as shown in the product images. Individual rosettes may colour somewhat differently even on the same branching plant, creating an impressive mixture of green centres, dark burgundy foliage and vivid red edging.

From ‘Oujiali’ to ‘Superbang’

This cultivar originated in China and was initially circulated under the name ‘Ou Jiali’ or ‘Oujiali’. ‘Superbang’ has since become the more widely used international cultivar name, while ‘Eucarie’ is another synonym sometimes encountered in cultivation. It is reported to have arisen as a variegated mutation associated with Aeonium ‘Velour’.

Growth & Form

‘Superbang’ develops the architectural form characteristic of shrubby Aeonium, producing rosettes at the ends of sturdy stems that branch as the plant matures. The broad, fleshy leaves are spoon-shaped with gently pointed tips, and established plants can develop into impressive multi-headed specimens.

Its combination of branching structure and continually evolving colour makes it particularly effective as a feature container plant. Even when the intense red and burgundy tones soften during active growth, the contrasting variegation gives the rosettes plenty of character.

Growing Aeonium ‘Superbang’

Provide bright light to encourage compact growth and strong colour, while protecting plants from excessively harsh summer afternoon sun, particularly if they have not been acclimatised to it. Grow in a very free-draining succulent mix and allow the growing medium to dry well between waterings.

Like other Aeonium, ‘Superbang’ does much of its active growth through the cooler part of the year and may slow considerably during hot summer conditions. Its appearance can therefore change substantially throughout the year — one of the characteristics that makes this cultivar so rewarding to grow.
