Graptopetalum amethystinum is native to Mexico and belongs to the Crassulaceae family. Its unusually thick, pebble-like leaves are covered with a natural waxy coating known as farina, giving the foliage its characteristic soft, powdery appearance. This farina helps protect the leaves and should be handled as little as possible, as fingerprints and rubbing can permanently mark the coating.
Lavender Pebbles is naturally slow growing, gradually developing sturdy stems and producing offsets that can eventually form attractive multi-headed clumps. Its unusual leaf shape and colouring have also made the species valuable in succulent hybridisation, contributing its distinctive characteristics to a number of cultivated hybrids.
Colour varies considerably throughout the year. Plants grown in good light often develop attractive lavender, pink and mauve tones, while softer blue-green shades may become more prominent during periods of active growth. Cooler temperatures and increased light can intensify the colouring further.
For the compact growth and rounded leaves characteristic of a well-grown Lavender Pebbles, avoid excessive fertilising. Heavy feeding, particularly with high-nitrogen fertilisers, can encourage softer, elongated growth and larger leaves. A light feeding during active growth is generally sufficient.
Grow Lavender Pebbles in bright light with several hours of direct sun where possible. In Australian conditions, morning sun or filtered afternoon light is ideal during the hottest part of summer, particularly for plants that have not been acclimatised to intense sunlight.
Use a very free-draining succulent potting mix and water thoroughly before allowing the mix to dry between waterings. The thick leaves store considerable moisture, making established plants quite drought tolerant. During cooler or wet periods, reduce watering and protect plants from prolonged moisture around the roots.
Lavender Pebbles performs particularly well in pots, where drainage, sunlight and watering can be easily controlled. It can also be grown in protected, well-drained garden positions, with protection recommended from heavy frost and prolonged winter rainfall.
For collectors who enjoy this species, we also grow Graptopetalum amethystinum Lavender Pebbles Candy Form. From our experience growing both forms, Candy Form generally develops a somewhat smaller, more compact growth habit than standard Lavender Pebbles when grown under similar conditions, while retaining the wonderfully plump, powdery foliage characteristic of the species.
Like standard Lavender Pebbles, its best compact form develops with plenty of light, restrained feeding and steady, relatively slow growth. Rich feeding or insufficient light can produce much larger, softer leaves and more elongated growth, so we prefer to grow these plants slowly and firmly to maintain their characteristic shape.

Succulents naturally change in colour, size and form throughout the year. Many develop richer colours and more compact growth during periods of seasonal stress, particularly through cooler months and brighter conditions, while warmer or lower-light conditions may produce greener, softer growth.
The plant you receive may therefore vary from the product images depending on the season, its stage of growth and current growing conditions. These natural variations are part of the character of living plants and do not affect their quality or health.
