Chamaelopsis ‘Fire Chief’ is a vibrant hybrid cactus admired for its fiery orange-red blooms and compact, trailing habit. Often listed botanically as Echinopsis chamaecereus ‘Fire Chief’, this cultivar descends from the well-known Peanut Cactus, a species native to Argentina. Its breeding has enhanced flower size and colour intensity while retaining the easy-care nature and charming, finger-like stems that make the original species so popular.
This clumping cactus forms dense mats of cylindrical, light green stems that resemble small peanuts joined end to end. Each stem is ribbed and lined with fine, soft, whitish spines that are far gentler than those of many traditional cacti. Mature plants typically reach around 15 cm in height, spreading or cascading up to 30 cm or more, making them ideal for hanging baskets, shallow bowls, or decorative pots where the stems can trail naturally.
In late spring to early summer, Chamaelopsis ‘Fire Chief’ produces spectacular funnel-shaped flowers in brilliant shades of orange to scarlet-red. The vivid blooms create striking contrast against the fresh green stems and can appear generously across established clumps, especially when the plant has experienced a cool, dry rest over winter.
This cactus thrives in bright light, including several hours of direct sun, and performs beautifully in well-drained cactus or succulent potting mix with added grit for aeration. Water regularly during the warmer growing months, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings, and keep almost dry through winter to prevent rot. In most Australian climates, it is best grown in containers so it can be protected from heavy frost and prolonged winter rain. Propagation is simple via stem cuttings, which root readily and quickly establish new plants.
