Echinopsis scoullar is a striking, clump-forming cactus native to South America, renowned for its deep green, rounded body and spectacular nocturnal blooms. Its growth habit is reminiscent of a grapefruit—flattened yet robust—featuring distinct ribs adorned with short, fine spines. Over time, it produces numerous offsets at its base, forming a dense cluster of miniature versions of itself, much like a mother hen surrounded by her chicks. While young offsets are covered in tiny spines, mature stems develop a smoother texture.
This cactus is well adapted to extreme climates, being highly heat tolerant, drought resilient, and frost tender. In its natural habitat, it experiences arid winters and warm, wet summers, making it well-suited for cultivation in regions with similar seasonal patterns. Provided with excellent drainage and protection from excessive winter moisture, Echinopsis scoullar can thrive outdoors in many Australian climates, including the tropics.
One of its most enchanting features is its large, satin-textured, trumpet-shaped flowers, which emerge from elongated stems. These starry blooms, typically pink-white or pure white, open in the late afternoon and continue their display into the night, exuding an ethereal beauty under moonlight. With its unique form and breathtaking blossoms, Echinopsis scoullar is a rewarding choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
