Mammillaria spinosissima cv. 'Spike', a distinctive cultivar from Paradisia Nurseries, is a captivating form of the classic Mammillaria spinosissima. Known for its less dense but larger spines, 'Spike' stands out among its peers. This charming cactus grows up to 8 cm in diameter, forming tight clusters up to 15 cm high over the years. Its propensity to produce offsets makes it an excellent choice for succulent enthusiasts looking to propagate and expand their collections easily.

Native to the mountainous regions of central Mexico, Mammillaria spinosissima thrives in tropical dry forests and xerophyllous scrub at elevations between 1600 and 1900 meters. This habitat, rich with species like Hechtia glomerata and Echeveria gibbiflora, lends to the cactus’s resilience and unique adaptations. 'Spike' inherits these robust traits, making it a reliable and eye-catching addition to any collection.

The cylindrical, dark blue-green stems of 'Spike' are adorned with large, needle-like spines that range in color from white to deep reddish-brown. In spring, it blooms with a ring of purplish-pink flowers near the apex, adding a splash of color to its striking silhouette. These flowers eventually give way to club-shaped fruits, enhancing its ornamental appeal.

For optimal growth, plant 'Spike' in well-draining cactus soil and place it in a location receiving at least four hours of direct sunlight daily. While it tolerates heat well, ensure it is protected from cold temperatures below -6.7 °C. Regular watering from spring to autumn, combined with occasional fertilization, will keep this cactus thriving.

Easy to care for and propagate, Mammillaria spinosissima cv. 'Spike' is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. Its unique characteristics and adaptability make it a standout specimen in any succulent collection.
