Crassula deltoidea variegata is a cultivated variegated form of Crassula deltoidea, distinguished by its compact growth, extraordinary colouring and thick, deltoid to rhombic leaves arranged in beautifully balanced geometric patterns. A covering of powdery farina softens the foliage and adds to its distinctive appearance.
The variegation is remarkably variable, ranging through cream, ivory and soft green, often developing blush pink, coral, orange and rich rose-red tones. Colour can change considerably with season, light, temperature and moisture, with stronger tones often developing under brighter light and cooler or drier conditions. As new growth develops and conditions change, the plant can take on a noticeably different appearance throughout the year.
Naturally slow-growing, Crassula deltoidea variegata gradually develops into a compact, multi-headed specimen. Its combination of symmetry, softly contrasting variegation and changing colour gives mature plants an almost sculptural quality, making them particularly rewarding to grow and simply admire.
Creamy-white, urn-shaped flowers may appear on branched inflorescences arising from the growing tips, generally during late winter to early spring in the Southern Hemisphere.
The non-variegated species, Crassula deltoidea, is native to arid regions of southern Namibia and South Africa, including Bushmanland, the Tanqua Karoo and Great Karoo, where it grows among gravel and stones in exposed, dry conditions. The variegated form offered here is a cultivated plant rather than the typical wild form.
For best results, grow Crassula deltoidea variegata in a very free-draining succulent mix with good airflow and bright light. Allow the growing medium to dry well between waterings and avoid keeping the plant continually moist, particularly during cool weather, as excessive moisture can encourage fungal problems and rot.
The reduced chlorophyll in the variegated portions of the leaves means this form grows more slowly than the typical green species and benefits from a little more consideration when positioning it. Bright light encourages compact growth and stronger colour, but plants should be acclimatised gradually and protected from excessively harsh Australian summer sun where scorching is likely.
Heavy feeding is unnecessary. Moderate nutrition and relatively lean growing conditions help preserve the compact, refined growth that makes this plant so attractive.
Propagation is best achieved from stem cuttings with several healthy leaves attached. Once the cut end has dried and calloused, cuttings can be placed into a free-draining propagation mix and kept carefully until established. Although leaf propagation may be possible, the small, tightly attached leaves can be difficult to remove intact and the extremely slow development of young variegated plants makes stem cuttings a much more practical method.
