Crassula ovata 'Crosby's Compact', also known as the Dwarf Jade Plant, is a delightful dwarf cultivar of the Crassula ovata species. This beautiful succulent shrub is characterized by its thick, branched structure, growing slowly and reaching a height of approximately 90 cm.
The beauty of 'Crosby's Compact' lies in its attractive, green, obovate leaves which are typically 2.5 cm long. The edges of the leaves are tinged with red, adding a striking contrast to the lush green colour. In certain lighting conditions, new leaves can take on an entirely red hue, enhancing the plant's visual appeal.
This plant offers a seasonal charm as well, with small, white, star-shaped flowers appearing in clusters at the tips of the branches during late fall and winter. When in full bloom, the flowers add a delicate charm to the robust form of the succulent.
Crassula ovata 'Crosby's Compact' is a hardy plant that thrives in a variety of environments. It enjoys part to full sun, highlighting its vibrant foliage under bright light. It's best suited for well-drained soil and prefers occasional to infrequent watering. Overwatering, especially during the winter, should be avoided as this can lead to "wet feet", a condition not favourable for the plant.
The plant's ability to endure temperatures down to -4°C makes it an excellent choice for container gardening in colder regions. During the winter, the plant can be moved indoors and requires little to no watering.
'Crosby's Compact' is reminiscent of some colourful cultivars of the New Zealand Mirror Plant (Coprosma), yet requires less summer irrigation. Its Latin name, 'crassus', meaning "thick", aptly describes the plant's plump leaves.
While this cultivar is popularly known as the Dwarf Jade Plant or 'Crosby's Compact', it's also referred to as 'Crosby's Red' for its red-toned leaves. Its compact size, striking leaf colour, and charming flowers make it an intriguing addition to any garden or indoor plant collection.
